  1. This was one of the most memorable episodes for me. Their website was highly trafficked after the airing of the show. Good plug!

  2. I’ve eaten there (March 2008) and I thought it was fine. The atmosphere was very relaxed and they seem to have picked up on the lessons learned after the second visit.

  3. We loved the Real Gravy story and resulting Fenwick Arms slogan. The Yorkshire Pudding looked spectacular, especially when the “real gravy” was added.

Living in Dallas, with a U.K. heritage, we love Yorkshire Pudding, but have never seen, or been able to prepare, any that look so good or rise so well as yours … and my wife is an excellent cook!

Would love to have the recipe and your secret to making such a wondeful dish.

    Thanks in advance.

    Sincerely,

    Ron

  4. My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful meal here in October of 2008.

I admit that I wanted to go to at least one of the RKN restaurants on our trip and this one turned out to be not terribly far out of our way. We didn’t know what to expect but we were hopeful.

My wife and I both had the Yorkshire Beef, Yorkshire Pudding and, of course, the Real Gravy. I don’t want to come across as too much of a fan boy…but we were both pleasantly surprised to have really enjoyed our meals.

We had many great meals in many great restaurants on our trip…but we’re not embarrassed to say that this dinner might’ve been our favorite of all of them. It was just really good.

From a “fan’s” perspective, we were disappointed that Brian was not on site when we visited–and we were quite sad to learn that his wife had “taken poorly” (as described by a local friend.)

The restaurant was not at all busy–one other table having dinner, a couple of people in the bar area. Our service was prompt and friendly–memorably so.

There is a little “shrine” to the Gordon experience in the restaurant but it wasn’t brought up to us as customers… When I brought it up as a comment to the staff on our way out, they were more than happy to chat a little about it.

If I were ever to find myself in the Claughton area again, I’d hope that the Fenwick Arms would still be open…as I’d love the chance to eat there again!

(And my extended hopes that Elaine is feeling better!)

  5. I passed by the Fenwick Arms by mere happenstance and I was driving too fast to see the “Campaign” sign. I thought “surely this isn’t that place” but the folks at the retaurant I was headed to assured me it was. So a few nights later I went back to try the gravy. Erm, and a meal. Service was fast and friendly and the place was doing very well for a Sunday. Brian was there and sat with me for about half an hour talking about where his food comes from and how he does this and that and it was a grand old time talking with him. Clearly he’s proud of what he does and he does it well. Again, serendipity had me eating a Sunday roast on National Yorkshire Pudding Day and without a doubt these were god’s own puds…puffy and crunchy to a fare thee well but full of substance, and the gravy absolutely lived up to the hype. Yes, the pictures are back on the wall, the fun plates (not cheapies mind you but Villeroy & Boch among others) are still used and the prawn cocktail (damn tasty) is in a wine goblet. You got issues widdat, punk? I’ll be back with my wife in August, looking forward to another great supper. Rock on, Brian!

  6. The old guy was ready for a casket and seemed like he was stoned.

  7. “The Highwayman” across the street sounded more like the name of a pub than “Fenwick Arms.”

  8. Was there last weekend. Brian back in the kitchen, Elaine front of house. Food first class. Really good, reliable , relaxed atmosphere.

  9. After seeing the episode first time round my husband and I decided we wanted to vist but never got the time - we went easter weekend, expected it to be busy but was just right. The food was lovely (a little over priced) the yorkshire puddings were huge - the “Gravy” was gorgeous. Staff were extremley helpful and friendly. Would definately go back again and recommend a visit for a nice afternoon out. B****cks to Bisto is our new motto.

  10. Their web site now says that the Fenwick Arms is closed but they are supposedly bringing the Campaign for Real Gravy to Yorkshire instead. Can anyone confirm if they’ve shut down or what’s going on with them?

  11. Went their on Saturday evening to find it closed up. The web-site suggests that a new restaurant will be opening in Yorkshire. Pity, the food was always good but we were often the only dinners on a Saturday evening.

  12. Sadly, now closed. 14/06/09
Message on website reads, ‘thanks for 6 years, taking the Campaign for Real Gravy to Yorkshire’.

  13. Was like having dinner with david blunket

  14. The Fenwick Arms is indeed now closed. Although business picked up a little, the brewery lost faith in Brian and Elaine and so they were forced to move. I enjoyed working there for the past 5 years and it is sad to see it close but hopefully Brian and Elaine will succeed in their new venture.

  15. Brian is a very sympathetic person.

  16. What a pity that the Fenwick Arms has closed. Mum is British and I am planning another trip in the future. I was really looking forward to a visit to this pub in particular, especially for the delicious looking yorkshire puddings. Mum makes a wonderful yorkshire pudding herself. Praying for all the best for Brian and Elaine!

  17. We went there last October 2008. Very sad that it is shutting down;I hope they do well in Yorkshire.

    Ron,
If you get a chance to go to the new place, talk to Brian about the Yorkshires….. Brian actually told me his recipe, and I’ve tried it at home. I had to adjust the tempurature for my over, but mine came out pretty damned good.

I won’t list the recipe here, but I will say that you need to get Texas muffin tins to make it work.

If anyone is on Facebook, I took a pic on one of the Yorkshire puds I made using Brian’s recipe. Yummy!

  18. Was very sad to see the place closed as my wife and I planned our trip to the Lake District with Claughton enroute. The good and hopeful news is that CAMRG is now in full force at the Ship Inn, Aldborough, Boroughbridge in Yorkshire…so Nigel Haworth’s Highwayman can now appropriately have the best Lancashire Hotpot in Lancashire and Brian and Elaine can have the best Yorkshire Pud in Yorkshire (again, to my taste it’s the best anywhere…good luck to them).

  19. This is a evident case of a psychiatric disorder called hoarding disorder. His retrieval of the dishes that were tossed in the trash is classic sign.
